Best Natural Treatments for Depression

 Is It Depression?

We all feel sad sometimes but for most of us, with time, these feelings pass. A diagnosis of actual or clinical depression occurs if you have had these feelings almost daily, for a large portion of the day) and it has lasted more than 2 weeks. In this article, we will explore the best natural treatments for depression. It is estimated that 1 in 5 Americans will experience an episode of depression in their lifetime.

The Many Forms of Depression:

  • Major/Severe – this type basically interferes with your ability to function
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder – This last at least 2 years
  • Perinatal – Occurs during pregnancy or after delivery
  • Psychotic – This type occurs when there is severe depression along with psychosis
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder – This usually occurs in parts of the world where there is little sun or it can come and go with the seasons.

What Causes Depression?

Research shows that depression can be caused by a combination of psychological, genetic, biological or environmental factors. Also, certain types of medications can cause depression.

How To Deal with Depression

The first step is to visit your physician to rule out any health conditions that may be presenting depressed emotions. If that visit goes well and you are given the all clear, you may want to talk with a therapist. If you are offered anti-depressants, understand that it can take 2-4 weeks for them to get into your system and start working. There are risks with these so please do your research.

If you have a house of worship, you may want to call to see if counseling is offered there as well. Often times, the lack of spiritual connection can make a person feel sad and blue.

How You Can Help Yourself

  • Try to get some exercise. It is a natural mood booster and will make you feel a bit better.
  • Listen to music you like as it can be a form of therapy in and of itself.
  • Find a person who is a “safe place to fall” for you…someone you can confide in.
  • Avoid self-medicating…it will only make you feel worse afterward. That’s a guarantee.
  • Prioritize your to do list and break up into small tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Best Natural Treatments for Depression

There are some wonderful supplements that can help with mood. If you are not in crisis or feel that your depression is getting in the way functioning on a daily basis, you may want to try some natural remedies.

A product I highly recommend to my patients is Mood Boost. It contains Magnesium which aids in sleep and relaxation. It has 5HTP which helps to synthesize neurotransmitters like Seratonin (one of the “feel good” chemicals in the brain) and is associated with sleep, mood, and relaxation. It also contains L-Tyrosine which is an amino acid and is very effective in reducing stress and anxiety.

The best natural treatment for depression and anxiety is the one that works for you!

So simple yet so effective at the same time. I started exercising at the start of the year (3x a week for 4 months straight) but when I started my new job that completely went out the window. I’m going to start again tomorrow. Exercising makes me so happy, I want to fee like that again. Great suggestions. Keep it up

I have tried out the MetaRelax before. It did work but I feel like there are others out there that could help my individual situation more. How do you think SeroSyn compares with MetaRelax? Thank you in advance for your help.

    1. Hey Sam!

Thanks for your input. MetaRelax and SeroSyn are both designed to support better mood, sleep and to help you relax. SeroSyn contains 5HTP, Chinese Skullcap and Asian Ginseng which are all extremely effective. It all comes down to how an individual body responds to particular ingredients. Some of my patients have definite product preferences. As with any supplement, ask your personal physician for their advice because they know your history. Hope this helps!

  5. Diane, this helps me to understand my clients better and friends and family members who suffer from this very real ailment. Thanks for wonderful ideas in how to overcome this obstacle in life! I am also taking 5-HTP before sleeping, since this helped me overcome insomnia.

  6. Great article Diane,
Depression can lead to other lingering issues and I agree that exercise is a great form of treatment. I have a non profit foundation that helps kids and we run into these type of issues with many of the young men and women. Thank you sharing valuable information on depression.

  7. My mother went through a very strong depresión phase when my grandfather died. She took care of him for several years, he had a heart problem and senile dementia. When he passed away my mother got very depressed, she didn´t want to leave the house and when she did leave to buy food or pay debts she used to get dizzy when walking on the street. She went to see a therapist and he prescribed her natural medicine and it helped her a lot, so natural medicine really works.

    1. Hi Ruben,

  8. Great post!
I went looking for a natural sleep aid for my daughter, who was working at two jobs for a while. I was also in the process of quitting anti-depressants and sleeping pills.
The product that I found for us contains L-theanine and 5-htp. I started using it every night for a while, just to cover my bases. I started feeling really good, hopeful, and positive! I felt better than I ever did with the anti-depressants, which seemed to only make me feel better during the honeymoon phase. I take magnesium at night anyway, so that must have helped the boost. Natural is the way to go!

    1. Hi Irma,

I appreciate your feedback. I’m so glad you got off your antidepressants!

I take magnesium also at night along with a special sleepy tea. You can find my article about it here:
